How to Choose the Right Sanitary Valve (Without Overengineering It)

15 July 2026

Selecting the right sanitary valve doesn't have to be complicated. Yet many food, beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical, and personal care processing systems end up with valves that are either overengineered and expensive or undersized and prone to performance issues.

The key is choosing a valve that matches your process requirements—not simply the most advanced or highest-priced option.

Start with Your Process Requirements

Before comparing sanitary butterfly valves, ball valves, or check valves, start by understanding how the valve will function within your system.

Ask yourself:

  • What needs to be controlled—flow, pressure, or direction?
  • How frequently will the valve cycle?
  • Does the application require CIP (Clean-in-Place) or SIP (Sterilize-in-Place) compatibility?
  • What product is flowing through the system, and what sanitary standards must be met?

Answering these questions will narrow your options much faster than comparing specifications alone.

Common Types of Sanitary Valves

Sanitary Butterfly Valves

Ideal for general on/off service in sanitary processing systems.

Benefits:

  • Cost-effective solution
  • Lightweight and easy to operate
  • Simple to clean and maintain
  • Excellent for food, beverage, and dairy applications

Sanitary Ball Valves

Designed for applications requiring reliable, tight shutoff.

Benefits:

  • Excellent sealing performance
  • Durable for demanding processes
  • Suitable for higher-pressure applications

Keep in mind that ball valves can be more expensive and may provide features your application doesn't actually require.

Sanitary Check Valves

Check valves automatically prevent reverse flow, helping protect equipment and maintain product quality.

Benefits:

  • Prevent backflow and contamination
  • Protect pumps and processing equipment
  • Support product integrity throughout the process

Common Valve Selection Mistakes

One of the biggest mistakes engineers and maintenance teams make is specifying components for worst-case scenarios that rarely occur.

The result is often:

  • Higher equipment costs
  • More complicated maintenance
  • Increased spare parts inventory
  • Longer lead times for replacement components

Choosing a valve based on actual operating conditions typically delivers better long-term value.

Right-Size Your Sanitary Valve Selection

The best sanitary valve is the one that meets your process requirements—nothing more and nothing less.

A properly sized valve can:

  • Deliver reliable process performance
  • Reduce maintenance requirements
  • Lower total cost of ownership
  • Improve system efficiency
  • Simplify future repairs and replacement

Rather than focusing solely on brand names or premium features, evaluate how the valve will perform in your specific application.

Need Help Choosing the Right Sanitary Valve?

Whether you're replacing an existing valve, designing a new sanitary process system, or looking for a cost-effective alternative, the right guidance can help you avoid unnecessary expense and downtime.

Contact Steel & O'Brien to discuss your application with our sanitary process experts. We'll help you select the right sanitary valve for your process, improve system performance, and keep your operation running efficiently.
