Surface Finish and Sanitary Fittings

6 June 2024

Surface finish is a crucial aspect of sanitary fittings, particularly in industries like pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, biotechnology and semiconductors. Surface finish refers to the quality and smoothness of the surface of a fitting and it plays a vital role in preventing contamination, facilitating cleaning and ensuring overall system integrity. In sanitary applications where the prevention of bacterial growth and ease of cleaning are crucial, utilizing the correct surface finish is essential.

Surface finish is measured in terms of roughness average (Ra) or the roughness peak-to-valley (Rz) value. The Ra value represents the average height of peaks and valleys on the surface of the material. Sanitary fittings aim for specific Ra values to meet industry standards and application requirements. Here are the differences between surface finishes:

32 Ra
A relatively standard surface finish considered suitable for many sanitary applications. It provides a reasonably smooth surface that is easy to clean and maintain. While it may not be the highest finish level available, it is cost-effective and suitable for applications where extreme smoothness is not critical.

20 Ra
Smoother than 32 Ra and often preferred in applications where a higher level of cleanliness is required. It offers improved resistance to bacterial adhesion and makes cleaning more effective. This finish is commonly used in the pharmaceutical and food processing industries.

15 Ra
An even smoother surface finish, considered high-quality for sanitary applications. It provides excellent resistance to bacterial growth and is suitable for applications where the highest level of cleanliness is essential. Industries such as biotechnology, semiconductor manufacturing, and ultra-pure water systems often require this level of surface finish to ensure product quality and purity.

The choice of surface finish in sanitary fittings depends on the specific requirements of the application. A 32 Ra finish is cost-effective and suitable for many applications, while a 20 Ra finish offers improved hygiene and is common in pharmaceutical and food processing industries. For the strictest sanitary standards and critical applications, a 15 Ra finish is the preferred choice due to its exceptional smoothness and resistance to bacterial growth.

It’s important to consult industry standards and regulations to determine the appropriate surface finish for your sanitary needs. Contact the Steel & O’Brien team to discuss the specific requirements of your application.
